Electronics generates heat, which must be removed to avoid equipment damage and service interruptions. Overheated equipment can also start fires! Cooling solutions can be passive, or require active removal of heat to maintain safe operating temperatures. Newer “green” technology often generates less heat than older generation equipment – and sometimes the cost of equipment replacement can be justified solely with avoided energy and cooling costs.

The first step in assessing cooling needs is to build a heat budget, listing the expected heat to be thrown off by all systems that will be housed together.
